Understanding Your Irish Salary & Take-Home Pay

In Ireland, your gross salary is subject to three compulsory statutory deductions calculated via Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE):

  • Income Tax (IT): 20% standard rate up to €44,000 (single) and 40% higher rate on the balance. Standard tax credits (€2,000 Single + €2,000 PAYE) are deducted directly from your gross tax liability.
  • Universal Social Charge (USC): A progressive charge ranging from 0.5% to 8% across statutory income bands.
  • PRSI (Social Insurance): Class A PRSI applied to fund statutory state benefits, state pension, and jobseeker support.

How to Maximise Your Take-Home Pay

You can legally reduce your taxable income and increase your net wealth through statutory Irish tax reliefs:

  1. Pension Contributions (AVCs / PRSA): Receive up to 40% income tax relief on contributions within Revenue age-related percentage limits.
  2. Rent Tax Credit: Claim up to €1,000 (single) or €2,000 (married) per tax year for private rental accommodation.
  3. Working From Home Relief (e-Working): Claim tax relief on broadband, heating, and electricity expenses incurred while working from home.
